SERVICES

The benefits of massage therapy are well established, and include the restoration of function to musculature, relief of physical and emotional stress, and significant improvement in mental outlook and acuity. In short, everything gets better when our bodies work the way nature intended!

As opposed to the often rushed and impersonal health care we all have experienced, a key focus of my practice is to take a slow, measured approach with my clients, and to understand them as people, as well as treat their bodies.

My services range from 30 minute clothed massages in my therapeutic chair to 1 hour, 1.5 hour, or 2 hour table massages. Both chair and table massages are available in my office in Morrisville, or can be provided at your office or residence.

ABOUT HEATHER BRYANT

I have been doing bodywork since early childhood, and have been a Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) for over 20 years. I trained at the Swedish Institute in Manhattan, and completed my certification at The Loving Hands Institute in Fortuna, California in 1997. I have had a flourishing practice in Vermont since 2000. I have worked in spas and chiropractic offices, but I prefer working in my own practice where I can dedicate more time and attention to each individual session.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This is my first massage. What should I expect?

First, we talk. You tell me a bit about why you need a massage, where it hurts, and a bit about your life, so I can get a sense of the physical and other stressors that may have caused your muscle distress.

Do I have to take my clothes off?

No, but it helps. Being able to touch your muscles directly simply makes the massage far more effective than massage through clothes. Typically, clients are left alone to disrobe and then lie on the massage table under a light blanket. During the course of a massage I uncover only the area on which I am working. If you need to roll over, I hold the blanket up as a screen. Your privacy is always respected and preserved.

What is "acupressure"?

Acupressure is a form of touch therapy that utilizes the principles of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. In acupressure, the same points on the body are used as in acupuncture, but are stimulated with finger pressure instead of with the insertion of needles. Acupressure is used to relieve a variety of symptoms and pain.

What is "deep tissue" massage?

Deep tissue massage therapy is targeted pressure on a specific area; the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints).

Will this hurt?

Deep tissue massage should not cause pain. During the course of your massage I will always ask "How does this feel?" or "Are you okay with this?". Everyone's comfort level is different, and I try and balance the benefits of deep pressure with the comfort of my clients. It is normal to be "achy sore" the day after a deep tissue massage, but that will quickly pass. It is helpful to drink 4-6 glasses of water in the 24 hours following a deep tissue massage, and soaking in a salt water bath may also be helpful.

Do you always use deep pressure massage techniques?

No, not at all. After a detailed assessment- I ask questions and listen carefully to what you tell me- the therapy is tailored to your needs. In some cases, for example with clients who are in chemotherapy or have fibromyalgia, deep pressure is completely inappropriate, and a gentle myofascial approach would be preferrable. The key is to create an effective program that best addresses the needs of each client.
